Multitrack recording at home

Ok you want to start recording your guitar and add vocals drums etc how would you go about this.
I have been doing this over ten years using software I have acquired from the open source market.

I have found very effective software that turns your pc or laptop into a recording studio and all you need is plenty of hard drive and memory  on you pc a decent sound card, usb mic or standard mic with adaptor and you are away.

So you see how easy it is to record music at home on the cheap.
I am plugging my CD as I think it takes a lot of work out of getting started on your recording ventures, yes there is software out there that is more powerful but also costs hundreds of pounds and I would say go for that at a latter stage but if you want good solid home recordings I think my CD will give you that.

Generally the output level from an electric guitar (or electrical pickup in an acoustic guitar) is sufficient to drive the line input port on a computer. Turn the volume control on the guitar all the way up. You will need a shielded adapter cable as shown below..

You probably have a guitar cable for plugging the guitar into an amplifier, and you can buy a 1/4 inch to 1/8 inch adapter instead, plug it into the computer line input then connect the guitar to the adapter using the cable. Be careful if you use this method not to pull on the sound card resulting in damage to your PC/Laptop.

Arm track one and start record/playing guitar


What I do is set my drum machine first and record into one of the tracks then start recording guitar on top of that. Check out my videos below to give you an idea of what can be achieved…

You can create your drum beats then export as a wav file and import intp the recording studio as a track.
